Customer Reviews

This belt USED to be amazingI bought the black version of this belt in 2010. I'm still using it today. It's fantastic and has held up to all sorts of abuse. Fast forward 9 years or so, I was looking everywhere for a nice brown dress belt, so I thought, "Hey! Why not get the same belt in brown."Apparently a lot has happened over time. The belt is no longer stamped with "Full Grain Cowhide" on the back but rather some generic "Genuine Leather" label, which can represent a VERY wide quality range for leather products. Second, opening the package in my bedroom made it smell like a nail salon. The smell of acrylic was so strong that I had to immediately put it back in the box, tape it back up, and then figure out how to get the return process going. 2You won't believe it looks so good, especially for what you paid! This is a beautiful, very quality-looking belt -- in fact, it's the second one we've bought. The edges of the original, bought in March 2013 and worn almost daily since, began to lose color. So, in places the belt is almost white, but because the belt is so thick and my husband likes it so well, I'm going to try to have it dyed. Meanwhile, because he does wear it daily, I first needed a replacement before I could take it from him, so ordered it again. I had forgotten -- and recent reviews didn't mention -- that it smells REALLY bad on arrival (extremely strong petroleum odor), so don't plan to wear it right away! We put the new one in the garage for a full month, checking it weekly until the odor was only detectable if I held it right to my nose. As I hope I'm the only one getting that close, we deemed it ready to wear. :) 4Great Belt but Ooooh that smellMy apologies to Lynyrd Skynyrd, but the belts definitely have a strong smell to them, especially the brown color. I also fond that the belt fit a bit small. The odor from both belts gets on your hands/clothes, but the brown belt can be smelled from a couple of feet away. Definitely not a big deal at work, but I wouldn't wear it on a date. Hopefully the smell will go away with time, but it's somewhere between a cheap rubber dumbbell and a tire. Ugh.In all other ways, the belt is excellent and after getting black (and sending it back for a smaller size), I ordered the brown. The belt looks great and feels like the quality will last for several years. 4High quality, VERY long lasting belt (got 3 years & 2 months out of the last one!)This full grain leather belt is top quality. This belt has lasted me over 2 years of regular wear so far and still looks great. I've never had a belt last more than 6 months, so I am very impressed with this one. Will buy again. Highly recommended.Update - After 2 years of daily wear plus daily wear of a cell phone belt-clip holster, the leather started to get pretty worn in that spot - visible to close inspection but still looked OK for wearing. Wearing the belt the opposite way or switching the holster side was an acceptable frugal trick for life extension. At 3 years and 2 months of daily wear, the leather loop split from its staple inside the belt. Maybe my extra 40 pounds gets the credit for that - just being honest. Time to buy a new one, and I will gladly buy the exact same belt (OK maybe a size larger). 5Low Quality... knockoff? Is this a cheaper / knockoff version? I have bought several of this exact same belt over the years. All of them feel very supple and are stamped "Full Grain Cowhide" on the underside. However, the belt I recently purchased feels much cheaper and more plasticky, and is instead just marked "Genuine Leather". The higher quality "full grain cowhide" version still exists (I found it from another vendor for around the same price), so I'm not sure what's up with this version on Amazon. The pictures and item name/description appear identical, but the product is not. 1Smells like tar.Smells like asphalt. The belt looks good and feels good. It feels like one solid piece of leather that is both substantial and supple enough to be comfortable. The problem is that it smells like asphalt. I'm not sure what they used in the tanning process but it's bad. I hoped the smell would dissipate and go away after several weeks but so far it hasn't. It's still laying under my desk for over a month and still smells terrible. Slightly less than when i first opened the package but enough to be too noticeable to wear.It looks nice and the price was good, but unless the smell ultimately goes away, I won't be wearing it and can't recommend it. 2Buy your actual waist size. Needs to be aired out before wearing.I bought this belt six or seven times over the past 15 years but in two different sizes. I lost weight before my most recent purchase and overestimated my waist size. I ordered a size 34 when I really needed a size 32. Usually the belt lasts anywhere from one and half to three years of being worn almost constantly. But I have been cinching it to compensate for the extra length. Probably because of that, the hole the prong goes into is wearing out after only nine months. Despite that issue, I keep buying this belt because it is quality in terms of material, construction, and appearance. It seems to be one piece of solid cowhide leather folded over and sewn together. The buckle is solid and does not fall apart. This belt has a great feature. It has seven belt loops, the center one of which is the exact size of your waist. So order your exact waist size and the amount of extra belt left over will be perfect. But be sure to know what your waist size really is. Many clothing manufacturers use vanity sizing, so you might THINK you know your waist size, but have been misled into not knowing what your actual waist measurement is.This belt will smell bad when you first get it. But if you air it out awhile, then it will just smell like leather.Edit: After putting this in my cart, the price was jacked up more to more than twice what it was (and what it should be). Today the price came down a few dollars but is still a lot more than this used to go for. When other reviewers say this belt seems as good as more expensive ones, they are referring to this belt's usual price. Not the current one as I write this. I am downgrading my review to three stars for the price gouging.Update: I realized most of my jeans are size 33 not 32 so I reordered another size 34. Thats's the beauty of having seven belt loops. You can go one or two notches in either direction and it still looks presentable. Other reviewers recently have commented that this belt now comes stamped "Genuine Leather" instead of "Top Grain Cowhide." Yes, that is true. The same item number is stamped on the belt. The construction of the belt appears identical. The texture of the new belt feels a little stiffer than the old one, but I have been wearing the old one almost constantly for around ten months. Real leather will soften in texture over time with use. Interestingly, upon opening the plastic bag this came in, this new one barely had much smell beyond that of new leather. But now I will be watching to see if this new "Genuine Leather" belt lives up to the previous "Top Grain Cowhide" version. And the good news is: The price currently is back the orginal lower price. 3ExcellentItem: Perry Ellis Portfolio Mens Leather Tubular Belt, BlackI finally purchased a replacement for my old belt which lasted almost 8 years - wore it on average most of the day 3 times a week. It failed by splitting along the stitch holes at the back of the buckle loop which is a separate piece of leather (photo 1). The hole I used most of the time stretched a little but held up well (photo 2). The new one is identical except that it s about 1 shorter overall with the holes shifted correspondingly. Buckle and belt exhibit excellent, simple, robust design for casual and dress wear.Info re other reviews: Both old & new belts are stamped Full Grain Cowhide on the inside. Very slight leather / tanning odor dissipates in a month or two. Folded belt means it s a single piece of leather folded over along the top edge of the length of the belt (photo 3) - the seam can be seen along the bottom edge (photo 4).Advice: Don t buy belts made from 2 or more thinner pieces stitched together (like a reversible belt with two different colors) - they split and crack. Cost me $30 in 2011, $24 with a small discount in Aug 2019. 5smells like leatherI was skeptical because of all the smell reviews but I ordered it anyways. It was half the price as the same belt in the department stores and amazon has free returns so i really had nothing to loose right? Mine ended up smelling like new leather and nothing more. Go figure. I was also worried about it being a larger belt made to be worn with jeans but its only 1 1/4" tall so fitting smaller dress pant belt loops isn't a problem. All in all, its a great belt that I'm very happy I bought and am thinking about ordering a brown one just like it.Edit: I ordered the second brown belt. Still very pleased. 5Nice business casual belt with incredibly strong smellI got this belt in black. It is very nice for the price. It is narrower than many jeans belts and has a near dress quality finish. But, it is a single piece of leather unlike almost all dress belts so it will not delaminate and the finish will not come off. I got it after borrowing the same belt from my brother when I forgot one while traveling. His is ~ 5 years old and still looks good.I read the reviews about the smell and thought that some people are overly sensitive. After all, my brother's belt didn't smell. The truth is this belt has an unbelievably strong smell. I could smell it outside my closed closet door and it stank up my whole walk in closet. I ended up wrapping it in newspaper and hanging it in the garage for a month. After that, it was acceptable (but still smells if you put it up to your nose).Despite the smell, I'm thinking about getting the chocolate color because for the price and quality I can live with hagning it in my garage for a month. 4
