Customer Reviews

Great belt, though a noisy adjustment mechanismThe belt material, color, buckle design, and overall concept are all great. My only gripe is that the sound of the adjustment notches passing through the ratchet mechanism. It's loud enough that people within 15+ FEET of you would probably hear it clearly, and it sounds very "mechanical", like a mechanism you'd expect to hear from a hand tool you'd use around the house or garage -- or a cap gun firing. I guess if the only alternative would be a mechanism that was quieter but could unexpectedly come loose because it didn't grip well, then I'd rather have this, but it does mean that there's no way to tighten your belt when anyone is around you without drawing attention to yourself, and it will be a lot of attention because it just seems very out of place to have a sound of that volume and tone coming from a formal piece of clothing. 4Best Belt EverI bought reversible belts for years. They suck. I bought more expensive belts that are not reversible. They also suck. In each case, the belt is confined by waist size and spacing of holes. Thus, the belt can be either too long or too short. Or too loose or too tight. With SlideBelt, all those problems are solved within 5 minutes. Cut the belt to the size of your waist. Attach whichever buckle they offer. Put on belt and adjust the ratchet mechanism to your waist size with precision instead of fumbling with holes. My last reversible belt cost $30, which isn't a bad price. But if you want a belt that fits, looks great, and can be used for everyday wear up to formal wear, SlideBelt is worth the price. I bought two: one mocha brown and the other onyx black. They're worth every penny and will last for years with a little TLC by conditioning the leather. 5** SEE UPDATED ENTRY *** Highly suggest you do not waste your moneyI have to admit I am keenly disappointed at the quality of this belt. Having owned a Feishanglige belt, now, for 1.5 years I guess I'm spoiled. This belt feels and looks CHEAP. I only wish the Feishanglige ratchet belt were still available here on Amazon but, alas, it's gone. Yes, it was Chinese-made and as a USAF Veteran I'm all for buying, "Made in the U.S.A." but if US companies can't come up with the right quality, what's the point? I paid 2x for this belt over what I paid for the Feishanglige - and worse than half the quality, in my opinion. If anyone knows of a GOOD quality ratchet type belt please let me know. I'll be keeping this because I hate the hassle of returning stuff but will NOT be buying another SlideBelt - I recommend you don't, either.Buckle is excellent - if I could rate these separately I'd give that 5 stars.UPDATE 1/9/2015Okay, I do not believe an original review should be retracted but I do believe there are times when one needs to be updated with new information. This is one of those times.I've upgraded my review from 2 stars to 4, as of this writing...here's why.I did send an email to SlideBelts support, per Brian's comment and I am 100% blown away at the awesome level of customer support I have now received. I ain't no spring chicken so have watched as customer service, in general, has deteriorated over the decades. The definition of disappointment is simply this: It is the gap between expectation and realization - the less you expect the less you're likely to be disappointed. I didn't expect ANY of the fantastic treatment I got.I sent them photo's of both the belt I received from them (they asked for a description of it, thinking I had one of their older belts - I figured a picture paints a thousand words) as well as a shot of the Chinese-made belt that I love so much. Here is Matthew's response (support rep):"Hi Andy,Thanks for sending over those photos. It looks like the belt that you have had (from China) is closer to our older style leathers. Our newer version is 100% leather without any polyurethane, which is why it is a little more raw looking; however, the actual quality of the leather is much better and will last you longer. What I'm going to do is send you one of our older leathers that more closely resembles your original belt and you can keep both to compare and use as you like. You would not be the first person to like the style of our older leathers better than our newer ones. The replacement leather has already been shipped via the United States Postal Service..."So it appears that it all comes down to personal preference. I like the feel of the soft, very flexible belt I got from China...SlideBelts are solid, genuine leather and have a rugged look (on backside only) and are a lot more stiff. BUT - Matthew says they're stronger and I have no reason to dispute that.So I've upgraded the stars to 4 - I'm still not super crazy about this belt but, wow, they're going the extra mile...sending me one of their older belts (that may be more of what I'm looking for) just to keep me happy. Yes, I'm sure my ability to write very effectively had an effect on that as well...they weren't just losing me as a customer, I blasted them out here and that obviously can have a much bigger impact ... but, bottom line, they're making it right.Thank you, SlideBelts!! 4the plastic strip on the back of the belt which acts to notch the belt (much like a plastic zip strip) brokeAfter the second time I wore it, the plastic strip on the back of the belt which acts to notch the belt (much like a plastic zip strip) broke, causing it to jam. I nearly had to resort to cutting the belt off of me. I will be returning it for a refund. I also ordered a black belt at the same time. I'll keep it for now, as I've had no problems yet (though I've only worn it twice). I really like the concept of the belt, but I can't say I would recommend it. 1Gimmick that works Update Sept 2014I was given this as a gift by a "fun" family member who knows how much I hate gimmicky items. So it had a couple of strikes against it from the start. Well it holds my pants up. The ratcheting mechanism works well and holds back my "rock hard" belly. By rock hard I mean shaped like a boulder.... So it looks nice, works, and that is about all I can say. Good belt.Just an update. This is no longer a "gimmick" in my book. It is a functional belt and buckle that works well. It has been a couple of months of use now and the system shows no signs of wear or loosening. Very pleased with the this belt. 5Great Idea, Some Flaws in Execution; Nice Dress BeltMy wife got me this belt when it was on a lightning deal a couple weeks ago. My old Levi's belt, a very plain leather one, is showing its age and will need to be replaced before too long. This belt is decent, but for the price, it has some flaws.First, the idea behind the buckle is just cool. Most variable belts like this (without holes at fixed distances) have limitations for me. Canvas belts where the clasp digs into the fabric wear out quickly. Woven leather belts can be too thick to carry a multi-tool or knife sheath. This design seems like it won't tear up the belt over time, and it's still just a plain leather strap all the way around.Unfortunately, the execution of the buckle has some trouble. It's very heavy, which is annoying when undoing it to slip on a sheath or sit down on the toilet. It's also really long: the thing that actually latches onto the belt is on the small piece of metal, not on the larger buckle. So if you line the larger part up with your belly button, the part with the latch will be off to the side, maybe hitting the belt loop of your jeans. I wonder if it could be made smaller and maybe from a lighter metal, that could really improve things. The strap itself is rather flimsy, especially given how heavy the buckle is. It could stand to be a bit taller, that might help. For whatever reason, the strap is easier to slide around in one direction than another. During the course of the day, the whole belt tends to "wander" around so the buckle gets off-center. But it's hard to move it back without loosening things up first. It's also not the best leather (there's a premium version for that) so I'm not optimistic about it lasting very long, but I might be wrong.Purely on looks, this thing is sharp. The buckle is shiny and clear, but dark and not ostentatious. The strap looks clean and professional. On the rare occasions that I do have to dress up, this belt is going to make me look good. Most of the time, though, it's going to be hidden under my untucked shirt, so you can see why I'm more interested in how it works than how it looks.Last thing's the cost. This was a gift, but I'd be remiss if I didn't talk about it in an honest review. I don't see $45 worth of materials in this belt. Maybe it's difficult to assemble? I would think at that price, we could get lighter metal or sturdier leather. It'd be nice anyway. In summary: this belt is a great idea, and it looks really slick, but there's room for improvement in the execution. I think this is much more of a dress belt than a "working outdoors" belt. If you want something that's going to be infinitely adjustable and look really nice, this belt will do well. If you want to strap on your tools and go work out in the yard, maybe try something else. 3Great belt overall but later on has issue with the buckle losing grip on the leatherBought this belt back on 04/2014 so I had it over a year before finally writing this review. The belt was great, it felt sturdy, looked nice, the buckle was a great design and intuitive. Overall I was very happy with how everything about it was however just this January 2016 I lost the buckle because towards the last months of owning it the buckle would lose the pierced grip it has into the belt. So anytime I threw the belt off when getting off work or dropped it to the floor it would, maybe twice a month, come apart. This wasn't too bad because it's easy to get it back together however this is definitely the reason it's only 4 stars instead of 5, because eventually one day it came apart and I had no idea where the buckle went. I was overall happy with the purchase lasting me this long so I recently went and bought the Top Grain version hoping that the better leather would lead to a better grip and no more issues with it coming apart. I will say a solution if this is happening would be to probably snip more of the leather off losing a little bit of belt however renewing the section the buckle pierces into for a better grip, I'll be sure to do it with the new belt if this starts happening. 4Audacious quality and comfort! For most of my life I have worn one belt size. Then- my 50's hit! I go up and down a few pounds regularly and it always makes the belt my worst enemy. It was either too tight or too loose. And then, of course, you always try to go back to the same notch, even if it's a struggle, right? So my belts would take so much stress (along with the rest of me)! This always caused a scuffed leather finish, mis-shapen buckle holes and strange bends and twists. When I found the SlideBelt I immediately had to try it. IT'S THE MOST AWESOME BELT EVER!! It does not matter where my girth is at any given moment- it ALWAYS FITS PERFECTLY. (Ever eat too much and wish you could loosen your belt just a skoshe? With this belt, you can- silently and secretly!) The ratchet buckle is super high quality and the belt itself is a nice grade of leather. (It's a little thicker than many of my belts- probably due to the strip embedded in it for the ratchet system). I bought the brown and am now going to buy the black. And if they ever come out with charcoal and/or burgundy, I'll be buying those, too! Cannot recommend this belt highly enough. Even if your waist size doesn't fluctuate, it's incredibly awesome to wear something that feels so customized and luxurious. It's a great price, too! 5Poorly made product. Non-existent customer supportThis belt just doesn't last. They slip when one is exerting or even moving strenuously. I have purchased 3 of these and one is already defective. They were quite appealing for a while, but in the long run they are a very poor choice. One of the pawls of the ratchet assembly built into the belt detached and made it impossible to get the belt off. The only way I could get the belt off was to invert the buckle and detach the buckle from the belt. I attempted to contact customer service twice and over a weeks time all I got was a robo response. I guess once you buy the belt they don't care whether it works or not. I will return to buying the $12 belts from Target and Walgreens. At least they work, and they are much more reliable, and of a higher quality. Not a good value by any measure.Edit: It's been over two weeks since I first attempted to contact customer support. Still no response. Two out of three belts defective and ZERO response from customer support makes me wish for a -5 star rating. The worst experience I've had in 19 years on Amazon. 1The only belt to which you would ever have to worry at the end of taking a s***.I own 2 separate versions of this belt and have been using them both for approximately 16 hours a week for almost 2 years. They look spectacular and are very convenient. I love the high degree of adjustability in tightening and ability to swap buckles quickly, though I never did.For looks and lifestyle, I'd give it a 6 out of 5 stars.Owning 2 and having one crap out has given me insight on some of the functional flaws in the design that reduce that 6 star down to a 3: > Buckle ejection > Clicking noiseThe way the buckle clasps to the belt itself is through a rotation of a spiking clamp. You insert the belt underneath, then fold down the clamp/lever which in turn rotates the spikes onto the belt, holding it in place. This rotation causes the belt to be about 3-4mm away from the maximum insertion point of the belt strap and the buckle. The distance is meaningless if it was not for the possibility of accidentally discharging the buckle completely. All that is needed is to bump the buckle into the belt "slightly". Since the belt is 3-4mm away from the buckle end, this freedom to move allows a single bump to "eject" the buckle completely. I think that manufacturing tolerance allows the clasp to move easier on some belts. My bad belt is extremely easy to bump eject from most angles. The other requires a very precise bump.So where could this occur? How about as you are finishing up a s*** session in a bathroom stall at work? Your buckle drops right down to the ground on your coworker's side of the stall forcing you to either reach over or they have to kick your buckle back. Guess what? That has happened to me. This buckle has dropped out on me 3 times, in one of which it landed in the adjacent stall to which I "awkwardly/majestically" thrust my foot into the adjacent side to pull the buckle back. Fastest I've ever washed my hands."Clicking noise while walking." This is caused by the design feature of using a floating lever. Depending on the angle at which the belt wraps around your body, (basically depends on how fat you are), the lever can float too much causing it to move freely around and click as you walk. This didn't happen to me until I lost 25 lbs but it doesn't happen with my other slide belt. I'm inclined to believe it's due to being on the wrong end of manufacturing tolerance.SO there you have it. I walk to the company bathroom with a clicking noise to announce to my coworkers I'm about to take a s*** and then drop my buckle in the adjacent stall. But everybody is still jealous of my great looking belt.In a rather strange twist, I'd probably still buy another one because they are gloriously beautiful. Maybe just glue the clasps shut so you can never bump eject and put some tape where it would click. 3
